Helping a New Generation Grow Their Own Food
Hi, I’m Yvonne Sims — founder of Sow Growery.
I believe growing your own food should feel simple, achievable, and empowering.
Whether you’re planting your very first seed, growing herbs on a windowsill, or learning hydroponics for the first time, my goal is to help you grow with confidence.
My Roots
Growing food has always been part of my story.
I grew up between two worlds that deeply shaped who I am today.
My mother is German, and I spent many years in Germany surrounded by my Oma and Opa, who grew their own vegetables, composted naturally, and gathered fresh ingredients directly from the garden for everyday meals.
Gardening wasn’t treated as a hobby—it was simply part of life.
Farm Life in South Carolina
On my father’s side, my family lived on over 100 acres of farmland in South Carolina.
I spent summers with my grandparents running through cornfields, shelling peas on the porch, helping feed chickens, and learning firsthand where food comes from.
Those experiences taught me that growing food isn’t just about gardening—it’s about family, self-sufficiency, and staying connected to the land.

WHY I STARTED TEACHING
Most people were never taught how to Grow Food
As I began sharing my gardening journey online, I noticed something surprising. People weren’t struggling because they lacked motivation. They were struggling because nobody had ever taught them the basics.
Simple skills like:
- Starting seeds
- Growing vegetables
- Understanding how plants grow
- Knowing what to plant and when
- Caring for plants with confidence
- Harvesting food from home
For generations, these skills were passed from parents to children, neighbors to neighbors, and gardeners to their communities.
Today, many people are learning these skills for the very first time.
And that’s exactly why I created Sow Growery. To make growing food feel simple, approachable, and achievable for everyone—whether you have a backyard, a balcony, or just a sunny window.
Get Back to Your Roots
Because everyone deserves the confidence to grow their own food.
Why Sow Growery exist
I believe growing food is one of the most empowering skills a person can learn.
When you know how to grow your own food, you’re not just planting seeds—you’re building confidence, independence, and a deeper connection to nature.
That’s what Sow Growery is all about.
My mission is to remove the barriers that keep people from growing their own food and help beginners feel successful from day one. Whether you’re growing in a backyard garden, a raised bed, a container, or a simple hydroponic system, I want to show you that growing food is possible.
Because when people learn to grow, communities grow too.
Through Sow Growery, We’re Growing:
- Knowledge
- Confidence
- Community
- Self-Sufficiency
- Healthy Habits
- Future Gardeners
